# Custom Home Builder in Homer, Michigan — Strouss Construction

> Custom homes, barndominiums, additions and pole barns in Homer, Michigan, about fifteen minutes down M-60 from our home base in Concord.

Homer sits on the south bank of the Kalamazoo River in the southeast corner of Calhoun County, about fifteen minutes west of our home base in Concord on M-60. Their village motto is Homer is home, and for us it nearly is.

The village itself dates to the 1830s, and past the last streetlight it is farm ground in every direction. Strouss Construction has been building in this part of Michigan since 1949, and the fourth generation of the family does the work.

## In the Village
Homer's housing runs old, frame houses from the village's mill town years on established lots near the river. Work there is usually an addition, a kitchen or bath brought up to date, a rebuilt porch, or a garage that actually fits a modern truck, and the job is tying new framing into old framing so the house still reads as one piece from the street.

## Farm Ground in Every Direction
Outside the village, Homer Township and the section roads around it are working farm country, and that is where the new homes, barndominiums and pole barns go up, usually on acreage split off a larger parcel. Those sites are on a private well and a septic field, so the soil evaluation and the driveway come before the floor plan, and low ground near the Kalamazoo River gets the drainage sorted before anything is staked.

## FAQ
### How close are you to Homer?
About fifteen minutes. Our home base in Concord is straight up M-60, which makes Homer one of the closest towns we serve. The crew, the equipment and a quick site visit all make that run without it touching your schedule.

### Can you build a barndominium on farm ground around Homer?
Yes. Acreage in Homer Township and the surrounding country is a natural fit for a barndominium or a house with a big shop beside it. The site comes first, the well, the septic evaluation, the driveway and how the parcel drains, and we sort out which office your permits run through before anything gets ordered.

### Do you work on the older homes in the village?
Yes. A lot of Homer's in town housing goes back to the eighteen hundreds, which means stone or block foundations and framing that was never sized for a modern load. We open things up, see what is carrying the weight, and build the addition or remodel to match the house instead of looking bolted on.

### Do you build near the Kalamazoo River?
Yes, with the water setting the rules. Ground near the river and the low spots off it holds moisture, so drainage, grading and where a septic field can go get settled before the house is sited. Planning around the water beats fighting it for the life of the building.
