New Homes & Barndominiums in Homer

Strouss Construction builds custom homes and barndominiums on your own land in Homer, Michigan and the surrounding part of Calhoun County. Homer sits on the south bank of the Kalamazoo River in the southeast corner of the county, about fifteen minutes west of our home base in Concord on M-60, so this is close to home work for us. The family has been building since 1949 and the company is now in its fourth generation. A build covers the lot and site review, floor plans and blueprints, well and septic coordination, the foundation and framing, and complete interior and exterior finishing, with one crew carrying the house from the first drawing to the final walk through. Most parcels out this way are rural, so the early questions are the well, the septic, the driveway approach and how the house sits on the grade.

Fifteen minutes from our own shop

Our base is on Grover Road in Concord, which puts Homer about fifteen minutes west on M-60. That matters more than it sounds. Short travel means the crew is on your site early rather than burning the first hour of the day driving, and it means we can get back out to you quickly when something needs a decision.

Rural parcels, wells and septic

Building outside the village means well and septic rather than municipal water and sewer, and that shapes the whole site plan. Where the septic field can go often decides where the house sits, which in turn decides the driveway and the grade. We work that out before anything is drawn rather than after.

Barndominiums and post frame homes

Post frame homes are common on rural ground out here, often on parcels split off a working farm. Whether a home can be post frame, along with setbacks and minimum square footage, is set township by township, so we check the zoning on your specific parcel before we design anything.

One family, one crew, since 1949

Dan Strouss runs the company today, carrying on the standard set by his father Charles E. Strouss. You work directly with the family the whole way, and the quote is written to the finished plans and goes in the contract before ground breaks, so the number means something.

Common Questions About New Homes & Barndominiums in Homer

Yes. Homer is on our regular service list and we build across Jackson, Hillsdale and Calhoun counties. Our shop is in Concord, about fifteen minutes east of Homer on M-60.

In most of the rural townships, yes, and post frame homes are common out here. The rules are set township by township, so setbacks, minimum square footage and whether a home can be post frame all depend on your specific parcel. We check the zoning before we draw anything.

No, and it is often better if you call first. We can look at a parcel with you before you buy it and tell you what it will actually cost to build on, which is the part most people find out too late.

We coordinate the well and the septic as part of the build, along with the permits and inspections. Septic placement usually drives where the house can sit, so it is one of the first things we settle.
