Just Down M-60 From Home
Homer sits on the south bank of the Kalamazoo River in the southeast corner of Calhoun County, about fifteen minutes west of our home base in Concord on M-60. Their village motto is Homer is home, and for us it nearly is.
The village itself dates to the 1830s, and past the last streetlight it is farm ground in every direction. Strouss Construction has been building in this part of Michigan since 1949, and the fourth generation of the family does the work.
Where We Build Around Homer
In the Village
Homer's housing runs old, frame houses from the village's mill town years on established lots near the river. Work there is usually an addition, a kitchen or bath brought up to date, a rebuilt porch, or a garage that actually fits a modern truck, and the job is tying new framing into old framing so the house still reads as one piece from the street.
Farm Ground in Every Direction
Outside the village, Homer Township and the section roads around it are working farm country, and that is where the new homes, barndominiums and pole barns go up, usually on acreage split off a larger parcel. Those sites are on a private well and a septic field, so the soil evaluation and the driveway come before the floor plan, and low ground near the Kalamazoo River gets the drainage sorted before anything is staked.
