New Homes & Barndominiums in Jackson

Strouss Construction builds custom homes and barndominiums on your own land in Jackson, Michigan and across Jackson County, and the family has been building here since 1949. The company is in its fourth generation and works from a base in Concord, about fifteen miles southwest of Jackson on M-60. A build covers the lot and site review, floor plans and blueprints, the foundation and framing, and complete interior and exterior finishing, with one family crew carrying the house from the first drawing to the final walk through. Jackson is really two building markets. Inside the city limits you are on city water and sewer with city review on the permit. Out in Summit, Blackman, Leoni, Spring Arbor and the other townships most people are building on acreage split off old farm ground, and the job starts with a perc test, a well, a septic field and a driveway, with the township running its own building department and the county health department handling the well and septic.

Building on land you already own

Most of our new homes go up on land the owner already has rather than in a development, so the site comes first. We walk the parcel with you, look at the grade, the drainage, where the well and septic field can go and how far power has to run, because where the house sits decides half of how it lives. You do not need to own the land yet to start. We will look at a parcel with you before you buy it and tell you what it will actually cost to build on.

Barndominiums and post frame homes around Jackson

Most of that work happens in the rural townships west and north of Jackson, on acreage off the farm roads around Parma, Sandstone, Rives and Tompkins, where zoning allows a large post frame building and there is room for a drive and a turnaround. What people are usually asking for is a post frame home with the shop attached. Whether living space is allowed inside a post frame building is set township by township, so we check the zoning on your specific parcel before we draw anything.

Inside the city or out in the townships

Inside Jackson city limits the lots are narrow, the neighbors are close and the permit is reviewed by the city. Past Summit, Blackman or Leoni Township you are on five and ten acre splits, wooded parcels near Waterloo, or lake lots at Clark Lake, Vandercook Lake and Gilletts Lake where a seasonal cottage comes down and a year round home goes up. Most townships in Jackson County run their own building departments, so we tell you which office your parcel answers to and carry the paperwork ourselves.

One family, one crew, since 1949

Dan Strouss runs the company today, carrying on the standard set by his father Charles E. Strouss. You work directly with the family the whole way rather than a rotating cast, the same crew that frames the house finishes it, and the quote is written to the finished plans and goes in the contract before ground breaks, so the number means something.

Common Questions About New Homes & Barndominiums in Jackson

Yes. Jackson and the townships around it are our home ground. The family has been building in Jackson County since 1949 and we work from Concord, about fifteen miles southwest of the city on M-60. We build across Jackson, Hillsdale and Calhoun counties.

Yes, that is most of what we do. We start with the site, the grade, the drainage, the well and septic picture and the driveway, then design the house around the land rather than the other way round. If you have not bought the land yet, call first and we will look at the parcel with you.

In most of the rural townships, yes, and post frame homes are common west and north of the city around Parma, Sandstone, Rives and Tompkins. Whether living space is allowed inside a post frame building, along with setbacks and minimum square footage, is set township by township, so we check the zoning on your parcel before anything is priced.

We do, as part of the job. Inside Jackson city limits the permit is reviewed by the city. In the townships it goes through that township's own building department, and the well and septic permits come from the county health department. We sort out which office applies before anything gets ordered.
